ASU Blogs

What is a blog?

The term “blog” is short for “weblog.” As blogger.com has so eloquently put, “A blog is a personal diary. A daily pulpit. A collaborative space. A political soapbox. A breaking-news outlet. A collection of links. Your own private thoughts. Memos to the world. Your blog is whatever you want it to be. There are millions of them, in all shapes and sizes.”

What is the ASU Blog Service?

ASU is providing all students, faculty and staff the ability to create their own blog. In fact, you can create as many as you wish! You’ll recognize the blog software ASU is offering (Wordpress) because President Crow’s blog and Adrian Sannier’s blog (University Technology Officer, ASU) both use this software.

Why is ASU providing this service?

We think this technology is so important for communication in today’s world, that we want to promote the use of blogs by everyone at ASU. The ASU blog service is starting small, but you can use your ASURITE UserID to sign on, auto-create your blog, become part of the blog directory and have your blog searched under the “ASU Blog” umbrella. In the future, you will be able to create blogs automatically for ASU classes or other university groups, without the need to manage accounts and access.

ASU WIKIS

What is a wiki?

From Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, a wiki (wee-kee or wick-ey) is a type of website that allow users to easily add and edit content and is especially suited for collaborative writing. The name is based on the Hawaiian term wiki, meaning "quick," "fast," or "to hasten."

What is the ASU Wiki Service?

ASU is providing all students, faculty and staff the ability to create their own wiki. In fact, you can create as many as you wish! You may recognize the wiki software ASU is offering (MediaWiki) because it is used by Wikipedia and by the University Technology Officer for his Tech Plan.

Why is ASU providing this service?

We think it is important to promote the use of wikis because it can facilitate the mission of research and learning at ASU, so we want to make it as easy as possible for ASU to get started using it. The ASU Wiki Service is starting up by using the industry leading wiki software (MediaWiki) and adding value by integrating into the ASU environment. Over time, we will continue to deepen this integration by providing ties to more ASU services.
