Hartford Center for Geriatric Nursing Excellence

The Arizona State University College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (HCGNE) is one of only nine centers selected through a national grants competition by The John A. Hartford Foundation and its Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity program (BAGNC) at the American Academy of Nursing.

The John A. Hartford Foundation

As an HCGNE, Arizona State University is proud to be part of the broader Hartford Geriatric Nursing Initiative (HGNI). Since 1995, through a $67 million investment from The John A. Hartford Foundation, the HGNI and its component programs have been preparing professional nurses to play leadership roles in improving the health and healthcare of older adults.

The rapidly growing and ethnically diverse population throughout Arizona and the Southwest is dramatically outpacing that of other areas of the nation, increasing the need for geriatric nurses who can meet the complex needs of older adults and address critical health disparities of minority elders.

The mission of ASU's College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence is to significantly increase the number of high-quality doctoral and post-doctoral level faculty in geriatric nursing needed to teach in graduate and undergraduate academic nursing programs throughout Arizona and surrounding Southwestern states.

Healthy Aging

Major emphasis is placed on addressing health disparities experienced by older adults by preparing geriatric nursing faculty who have expertise not only in promoting healthy aging but also in meeting the unique and growing needs of the Southwest’s ethnically diverse, immigrant, frail, and advanced elderly population in both rural and urban areas.

Our Hartford Center has established shared resources in geriatric nursing across five Southwest states (Arizona, New Mexico, Southwest Texas, Colorado, and Nevada) through implementation of the Southwest Consortium for Geriatric Nursing Education.
