About the Program
Mujeres en Acción: Walking in Hispanic Women is a walking program to see if social support intervention programs are important to older Hispanic women. The program is for older Hispanic women to promote the start and maintenance of regular physical activity. We want to test if supportive information, encouragement from Promatoras, and walking as a group will increase physical activity and health benefits.
Health Facts
- Two factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease in Hispanic women are being overweight or obese and a lack of physical activity.
- Cardiovascular disease is 36% greater in Mexican American women, than in other women
our program
The key parts of the program, Mujeres en Acción Por Su Salud, include: (1) social network support, including a community-based, group intervention format led by trained Promatoras, (2) emotional support, (3) instrumental support, (4) informational support, and (4) appraisal support. Eighty-eight Hispanic women between the ages of 45-70 will be recruited from the Maricopa Medical Center Community Clinics and surrounding community areas.
