Nascar Drivers and Sport Celebrities Raise Funds for Seriously Ill Children and Their Nurses
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Petty joined other drivers and many sports celebrities on Thursday, February 28, 2008, at Kierland Golf Club in Scottsdale to benefit Kyle Petty's Victory Junction Gang Camp and the Arizona State University College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation.
Celebrities who participated in the benefit included 1982 Heisman Trophy Winner Herschel Walker, Basketball Hall of Famer Rick Barry, Baseball Hall of Famers Robin Yount and Fergie Jenkins, former Seattle Mariners star Edgar Martinez, baseball personality Bob Uecker, former Phoenix Suns star Dan Majerle, American Gladiator "Wolf" Hollywood Yates, Golf Pro Paul Purtzer, and NASCAR drivers Juan Pablo Montoya, Kenny Wallace and Elliott Sadler.

The charity golf tournament raised $110,000 to benefit seriously ill children. The funds raised will be divided equally between the Victory Junction Gang Camp and ASU's College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation. Petty’s Camp aids children with chronic medical conditions and serious illnesses. The funds raised for the College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation will be used to educate future nurses to care for extremely or chronically ill children.
"Improving healthcare for children and teens is a strategic initiative of the College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation," said Bernadette Melnyk, Dean and Distinguished Foundation Professor in Nursing. "It is a privilege to partner with Kyle Petty’s Victory Junction Gang Camp and Phoenix International Raceway to benefit children and the nurses of the future who will care for them. We look forward to this event being held annually and to the program's continued growth in the coming years."
