9th Annual Evidence-Based Practice Conference Expected
to Draw Record Attendance
Arizona State University News Release

Center for Advancement of EBP at Arizona State University to Host Event

PHOENIX, January 10, 2008 – More than 300 healthcare professionals from across the nation and world are expected to attend the 9th Annual Evidence-Based Practice Conference held in Phoenix on February 13–15. The Center for the Advancement of EBP at the College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation at Arizona State University is hosting the conference at the Renaissance Glendale Hotel & Spa.

In EBP, the practitioner makes decisions by integrating evidence (e.g., research, information from the patient’s medical history and practice generated data) with clinical expertise, and the patient’s preferences and values for treatment. Combining the best available research with an individual’s data and values, the clinician makes a decision with the patient that will lead to the best outcome for that patient.

According to Bernadette Melnyk, dean of the ASU College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation, only about 15 percent of healthcare providers use EBP for making clinical decisions while 85 percent rely upon traditional practices and/or the provider’s own experience rather than on current research. When patients receive care from providers who implement EBP, they can expect 28 percent better health outcomes.

The first day of the conference will feature focused workshop presentations by leading EBP experts on: EBP Basics & Beyond; Systematic Reviews: Using Evidence to Impact Outcomes; Teaching Evidence-Based Practice for Educators; and Making EBP a Reality in Your Organization.

Days two and three of the conference, February 14-15, feature speakers from across the country and globe focusing on acting on the evidence to impact outcomes through EBP in five specialty tracks, including:

  • Acute/Critical Care
  • Aging
  • Children, Teens and Families
  • EBP Implementation
  • Psychiatric Mental Health.

Diana J. Mason, RN, PhD, FAAN, editor-in-chief of the award-winning American Journal of Nursing, will present he keynote address “EBP: Why Policy and Politics Matter.”  Dr. Mason is the co-editor of the award-winning book, Policy and Politics in Nursing and Health Care,” now in its fifth edition. She writes and speaks about health policy and politics for national and international audiences. Lance S. Patak, BSN, MBA, CCRN, chairman of the board and CEO, Vidatak, and co-founder, Biomedical Research Exchange, Inc. of Los Angeles, will deliver the end note presentation “From Research to Practice Change: One Nurse’s Journey.”

The conference also will include a welcome reception featuring posters of EBP initiatives from across the nation and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation.
