Academic Bowl

The College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation will be competing in the second annual University Academic Bowl. The college will be competing against sixteen other colleges representing all four of the University campuses. Each member of the four-person winning team will be awarded a scholarship prize of $4,500, and the winning team’s alternate members (up to four) will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. The winning school also wins the right to display the President’s Cup trophy for a year.

The College will be competing in the first round against the W.P. Carey College of Business on October 10th at 8:20 PM in the Pima Room of the Memorial Union (MU) on the Tempe Campus.

If we qualify for the quaterfinals, they will be held on evening of October 17th in the Pima Room of the Memorial Union (MU) on the Tempe Campus.

The semifinals and finals will be held on October 23 for semifinals and finals. They will be televised on Channel Eight/KAET-TV.

We have selected four team members for our Academic Bowl team. We have included two students who are in the lower division nursing program, one who is applying to start the RN-BSN program and another student who is in the RN-BSN program.

The following is a brief bio about each of our four team members:

Brian Arnett - is a student completing the lower division nursing courses and a native of Arizona. He enjoys music, wakeboarding, learning Spanish, and spending time with his sweetheart Amanda. He works at Phoenix Children’s Hospital as a patient care tech and unit clerk. He is an eagle scout and a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society. He has applied for acceptance into the upper division nursing courses, and plans to attend graduate school and become a nurse practitioner.

Derek Byrne - is an RN at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He works on the Acute Surgical and Orthopedic floor. He is a Junior at ASU and hopes to start the RN-BSN program in January 2008. He was born in Maryland and has lived in Ohio, Kentucky, California and now calls Arizona home. He has two terrific kids and a wonderful girlfriend.

Karen MacDonald - After being an RN for 14 years, she has returned to school to complete the RN-BSN program.  She is looking forward to experiencing new adventures at the University level and enjoys talk radio, current events and re-learning history.

Kari McBride - Graduated from high school in Shanghai, China and moved back to her birth city of Phoenix this past summer. She is currently a freshman in the nursing program and hopes to go into Pediatric Nursing.
