Teaching Excellence in Simulation Education
January 6-8, 2009
The Educational Simulation Program at the LRC provides a safe learning environment for students to practice/master nursing skills in a dynamic encounter through various health care settings. This lab setting provides an opportunity to practice clinical reasoning, which along with guided reflection, supports students in developing reflective practice and increased self confidence. Simulation is an environment that lends itself to practicing interpersonal skill development such as leadership and communication skills. Simulation experiences provide students with opportunities to act professionally and maintain confidentiality and to be treated as such by faculty, staff and peers. Videotaping occurs for education, research and guided reflection purposes
More than 12 patients with personalities have well developed case studies that guide experiences for all levels of learners for the ASU nursing students. When these simulations go live students are assigned roles such as primary nurse, charge nurse or family member. The manikins interact with the students verbally through the faculty or staff in the control room. Other students and the faculty are watching from a nearby viewing room so they can actively participate in the guided reflection that occurs after each scenario.
Each simulated patient’s stories, charts and programming files are shared in order to be consistent across the three ASU campus sites. The manikins are important for setting the stage for patient care, but charts, actual medical equipment and props, like realistic blood clots, all add to the reality for the student learning.
program goals
- Use innovative learning technology as a catalyst
for change and improvement in healthcare. - Support knowledge and skill development of healthcare educators.
- Strengthen and expand human patient simulation resources through collaboration and partnerships accross the valley. The College's ESP is a founding member of the AZ Simulation Network.
