A special survey was conducted by American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) in 2007 to determine the vacancy rate for faculty. In a national survey sample of 344 schools (55.4% of AACN-member institutions), there were 8,698 budgeted full-time faculty positions. Of these positions, 767 (8.8%) were vacant. The mean number of vacancies per school was 2.2 with a range of 1-20 (AACN, 2007).
