workshop description: 

Simulation is a powerful teaching methodology that reliably assists our students to develop clinical decision making skills. The 3-day intensive workshop will focus on the essential elements of scenario development and utilization of excellent educational practices in simulation education. Participants will develop a scenario during the workshop for use in their own educational setting.

  • Early Bird Registration by May 5:  $1,000/3-day workshop
  • Regular Registration after May 5: $1,300/3-day workshop
target audience:

This workshop is designed for educators who desire knowledge and critical skills to design, conduct, and evaluate simulation learning activities. Simulation Educators from all disciplines can attend. Maintaining a low participant-to-faculty ratio necessitates limiting registration to 20 participants.

At the completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Apply principles of best educational practice to scenario creation.
  • Analyze selected learning theories and their relationship and application to simulation education.
  • Develop objectives and storyboard or decision tree for individualized simulation scenario.
  • Utilize features of SimMan™, SimBaby™ and VitalSim™ software to program simulation scenarios.
  • Demonstrate best practice for guided reflection.
  • Validate simulation scenarios reflection through group participation.

  • Creating Scenarios, Objectives, Story Boards and Decision Trees
  • SimMan™ and SimBaby™ Software Programming – Part I
  • Homework Assignment
  • Informal Individual Consultation

Day 2:

  • Learning Theories, Objectives and Leveling
  • Searching for and Applying Evidence to Validate Simulation Scenarios
  • SimMan™ and SimBaby™ Software Programming – Part II
  • Using Best Practice to Create and Validate Reality
  • Homework Assignment
  • Informal Individual Consultation

Day 3:

  • Review Homework
  • Guided Reflection – Taking it to the Next Level
  • Complete Programming and Prepare to Validate Group Scenarios
  • Run and Validate Group Scenarios Created During Workshop

21.0 contact hours will be provided for the 3-day workshop. Less than complete attendance will require contact hours to be prorated accordingly.

Registration Deadline: May 30, 2008. Registration includes the cost of all course materials, a certificate of attendance, continental breakfast, lunch and snacks, and parking validation. 

Refunds will be made, less $75 for handling, if registration is cancelled in writing by 5/26/08.  Cancellations received after 5/26/08 will be refunded minus a $250 materials fee. No refunds will be given for no-shows.

  • Laptop computer
  • SimMan™ and/or SimBaby™ software already loaded
  • Jump drive

No “Participant Research Focus Questionnaire” is required for registration. About one week prior to the workshop, participants will receive an email with a link to Survey Monkey to complete an assessment of their simulation and teaching experience.
